Read any bird keeping magazine, especially in America, and you will be bombarded with nutritional advice. The advice is heavily polarised into those who believe
in pellets and those who believe in completely natural diets. In reality most bird keepers tread some sort of middle path between these two extremes. Are they getting the best of both worlds or the worst?
This discussion attempts to look at the strengths and weaknesses of the two extremes, considers the obvious middle way and finally proposes a new (at least to Americans) middle way.
This discussion is
important as research tells us that 98% of pet birds in America are not fed the very basic nutrients required for long term health. Personal discussions with bird breeders suggests to us that this figure is
roughly true of breeding birds too.
Happier, healthier, longer-lived and more productive birds are the rewards for getting your birds' diet right. It is far easier than you think and doesn't have to be
boring for your birds.
