Colloidal Silver for Cage & Aviary Birds

Much has been written in the British bird keeping press about Colloidal Silver. As you would expect when a product is so heavily "hyped up" in the media it is wise to interpret what you read with some caution.

We find Colloidal Silver very useful for treating a number of infections both internal and external. It has been particularly useful for eye problems, skin infections and respiratory infections (where it is difficult to know whether to use Wheeze-Eeze or Colloidal Silver).

Certainly we have had excellent results in circumstances where we would otherwise have recommended a vet visit and even, at times, when conventional veterinary anti-biotics have failed.

What we don't recommend is Colloidal Silver as a regular, daily treatment. The body is unable to effectively remove elemental silver from the bloodstream. So prolonged use leads to a build up in the organs. In humans this has been reported as causing the skin to go grey. Even though silver is very safe this does not seem sensible to us.

For the same reason we do not advocate Colloidal Silver as a water sanitiser. It does not completely discriminate between beneficial bacteria and dangerous germs and it is not destroyed in the gut. The result could be a reduction in digestive function. In contrast Aviclens (Saniclens) is destroyed in the gut so does not damage the beneficial flora nor does it build up in the body.

We are excited about Colloidal Silver but there are plenty of times when we prefer to use probiotics or immune support products like Guardian Angel. Feel free to ask our advice if you have a sick bird:
